This week, our “big kids” have been busy with our statewide testing, so we have been in our classroom….ALL DAY…EVERY DAY….literally…it rained = no recess! Call in the reinforcements…aka…all of the hands on activities that I could possibly find!
In math, we have been working on measurements…capacity style. One day, we just had to do a little baking in the classroom to help them really grasp the concept. I gave the students their ingredients, the recipe, and baking tools. Their only instructions were to work together as a team and get the job done! It was so fun to watch them work together, assign jobs, and cheer one another on. They were even in charge of cleaning up their mess…completely!
At the end of the day, the students enjoyed their baked goods.
Since it was raining, we enjoyed some time with our reading partners during book chat time! If you haven’t checked out Beth Newingham’s Reading Partnership ideas, you are missing out! My kiddos are so in LOVE with book chats!
I have been amazed by how detailed their discussions have been lately!
In science, we have been continuing our study of biomes around our world. This week was all about the rainforest. The students researched animals found in each layer. Then they created this project to show where each animal could be found. Finally, we wrote the layers on sticky notes and made it into a little game. The students rotated around the room and used the sticky notes to identify each layer of a friend’s rainforest.
We were also busy bees preparing our Mother’s Day gifts. I saw an idea on Pinterest and ran with it. I knew it would be a hit or miss, so thank goodness it was a success! They turned out so cute and the kiddos were so excited to give them to their sweet moms!
We are down 16 days! These next few weeks will be crazy busy with field days, writing celebrations, academic celebrations, awards day….and on…and on…and on!!!! Bring it on! :0) Have a restful weekend, sweet friends!
